Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben were familiar characters on food packaging when I grew up. American corporate inventions,
this “food” was a modern convenience in the 1950’s and 60’s. Did we ever think to connect these characters with the
dark history they represented? No, we did not. Are we more thoughtful now?
Well . . .
Uncle Ben still exists on packaging in this very same depiction, but Aunt Jemima has been updated to reflect a young, more modern black woman. That hardly matters because the name is still an echo of the past. Do we still need to pour that over our pancakes?
