Modified Arts presents Ryan Parra – Vivarium Foras + Emily Ritter – Polyflora. A pair of solo exhibitions featuring the work of Arizona State Graduates Ryan Parra and Emily Ritter. In these exhibitions, both artists focus on the connections between humans and plants.

Ryan Parra’s Vivarium Foras presents fieldwork photographs of edible, medicinal, and psychoactive plants growing throughout the Southwest. Meaning “place of life outside,” Vivarium Foras explores the unique relationship between homo sapiens and the natural world through themes of curiosity, containment, control, and conjury.

Emily Ritter’s Polyflora is a possible future where plastics have fused with organic matter, creating hybrid species that have replaced the life we know today. This new environment embodies the planet’s rebirth from ecological distress. It has taken millions of years for organisms to evolve the abilities and systems needed to reintegrate organic material back into the life cycle. Plastics have only been in existence for close to seventy years, so time is still needed for Earth’s current systems to adapt to them. In this possible future, those systems needed to assimilate plastics have evolved.
