Modified Arts presents Microcosms: Recent Work by Thomas “Breeze” Marcus. The exhibition features a range of work by the artist in different mediums, including moderately-sized fine line pen and ink drawings, and larger aerosol works. The exhibition is curated by Amy Young/Perihelion Arts.
Marcus grew up in and around the Phoenix area, including the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Reservation, east of Phoenix, and started drawing around the age of seven. As a teenager, his mural skills began with practicing with graffiti. That entry into creating art in public places, along with the evolution of his talent and styles, grew into the artist becoming a sought-after public muralist, whose work can be seen in multiple locations, regionally, and outside of Arizona in different states, including Florida, where he has traveled the last few years to do mural work during the annual Art Basel event in Miami.
His fine line work is an homage to his Tohono O’odham ancestors and their style of basket weaving that includes complex patterns – Breeze’s paintings and drawings are simultaneously complicated, beautiful, and chaotic, bringing those same type of woven intricacies to life in a whole new way.
Not bound to walls or canvas, Breeze has created his work on a variety of interesting surfaces, from vinyl records to curvy gourds. Marcus’ fine art paintings have found a home at Blue Rain Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, among a roster of impressive artists. This is his first solo exhibition in Phoenix in three years.
