Modified Arts is proud to present a focused collaboration with Clottee Hammons of Emancipation Arts, showcasing the work of veteran Arizona artist Jackie Andre Muhammed.

Among Emancipation Arts’ objectives is the cause of raising the cultural profile of Black Artists in Maricopa County through education and exposure. The lack of appropriate exhibition venues has hampered local Black artists for at least two decades. The result is a cultural disconnect between the thriving downtown Phoenix First Friday events and Black artists that are relegated to February and crowded fringe events.

Muhammed is best known as a musician, poet, and visual artist, receiving praise from local artists and icons Dr. J. Eugene Grigsby and Rip Woods early in his career. The artist creates vibrant, primal paintings using a technique he developed through years of experimentation in which he combines oil and water. He has the ability to see stories and beauty in organic materials and mundane, cast-off objects; transforming them into African-inspired assemblages and sculptural works.

Receiving his first arts education in junior high, Muhammed eventually expanded into playing bass, and joining the Black Theater Troupe and other groups through the 1970s and ‘80s to contribute original music to each. His most influential moment came in 1978, becoming a member of the Nation of Islam, and receiving his name Muhammed from Minister Louis Farrakhan.

Presenting the latest direction in Jackie Andre Muhammed’s multifaceted career, this collaboration represents an exciting turn for Emancipation Arts and Modified Arts, two organizations with years of expressive exhibitions and events.
