Modified Arts presents new works by Phoenix/Arizona artists Jessica Dzielinski, Katrina Fengler, and Katharine Leigh Simpson.
Jessica Dzielinski’s loosely-rendered paintings of urbanity recall her day-to-day observations of the human influence. Inspired by comic books, Dadaism, and album cover art such as that by the Dead Kennedys, her works resonate in their depictions of the landscape replete with commercialism, society, and the humorous contradictions intertwined.
Katrina Fengler uses photographs as inspiration for drawings, but beyond sources of reference we find images with a guarded and distant point of view that seem to peer beyond the confines and demarcations found in the urban layout.
Katharine Leigh Simpson incorporates ordinary materials such as paper to construct energetic sculptures and reliefs that are meditative yet chaotic in their composition. Her site-specific work, this time conceived for an installation at Modified Arts, capture both tension and unity within social constructs.
