On opening night of Sara’s Modified Arts exhibition in the fall of 2000, Will met Sara and purchased one of her early paintings. A creative conversation was sparked that has deepened over the years and given impetus to redux which brings together the recent work of Tucson based artist Sara Hubbs and the photography of Phoenix based architect Will Bruder.
Sara employs paint, cast offs and reworked product packaging while Will uses his smart phone to capture and compose images of his life and travels. Both Sara and Will mine everyday experiences in their work, inviting us all to look, with care and curiosity, at the world around us.
Sara Hubbs is a visual artist and writer from Phoenix, AZ. She completed an MFA in Visual Art at The George Washington University in 2008 and a BFA in Painting from Arizona State University in 2000. She has shown nationally and internationally including, the Ex-Teresa Arte Cultural in Mexico City, Abu Dhabi, Washington, DC and in New York. Sara completed residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and at The Cooper Union.
She lives in Tucson, AZ with her husband and daughter. Hubbs’ work explores the discarded shapes of material culture as sites of meaning, their parallels with abstraction as a formal practice, their implications of time, and a range between familiarity and ambiguity. Her process explores immediacy and play and looks for possibilities within abstraction to address and question familiar narratives, engage with a felt sense, and the fullness of edge states.
Will Bruder, FAIA arrived in Arizona in 1967 for that summer’s ‘silt pile’ workshop with Paolo Soleri at the Cosanti Foundation. He completed his BFA in Sculpture from UW/Milwaukee in 1969, passing his architectural registration exams and opening his first Phoenix studio in early 1974.
Noteworthy Valley projects include ASU Deer Valley Rock Art Center, Burton Barr Phoenix Central Library, Temple Kol Ami, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Henkel Headquarters and Agave Library. Will Bruder Architects’ portfolio includes numerous cultural buildings and private residences from coast to coast as well as local mixed-use infill projects such as the Vale, Loloma 5, Mezzo and El Dorado on 1st. Will has held visiting professor chairs at Illinois Institute of Technology, Yale University, MIT, UNM/Albuquerque, University of Toronto, University of Virginia, Portland State University and University of Oregon, University of Southern California to name a few. He was awarded a mid-career Rome Prize in 1987 to live and study for six months at the American Academy in Rome. In 2000 he received an Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Actively engaged in downtown Phoenix civic conversations, Will advocates for the role of design in place-making within our young, fragile desert city.
